Why your skin deserves 9 oils rather than one…

Posted by Alexandra Brousset on

Ever heard that piece of advice that says you shouldn’t look for your partner to be your best friend, confidante, lover and advisor all in one…? Well, turns out the same goes for your facial oil. While every oil has its superpower, the only way to get the maximum number of benefits is to team them up in one magical blend.

Think about it this way: there are five key elements to consider when it comes to formulating the perfect facial oil:

#1 - Process. Cold-pressing is the traditional method of extracting oil from seeds, fruits and flowers, which doesn’t use any heat. This is because heating oxidizes oils and breaks down many of the vitamins and fatty acids that they contain, so by cold-pressing them all their natural goodness is retained.

#2 - Versatility. Multiple ingredients should be used to be truly beneficial to the skin and its moisture barrier, for which you’ll need a mix of vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants and sterols.

#3 - Absorption. Any formula should be lightweight and absorb quickly and easily, without leaving any residue on the skin that could clog your pores.

#4 - Feel. A luxurious facial oil should of course feel like a treat, ideally with a relatively dry feel and spreading easily so that your skin feels soft, silky and radiant, but never greasy.

#5 - Balance. Using multiple oils will give you the best shot at regulating and balancing your skin, whatever its type or specific issues.

Fortunately, we’ve taken all of the above into account with our Illuminating Magic Oil, Marrakech Light, which contains not just one or two but nine cold-pressed, multitasking oils, giving you a supercharged glow that’s suffused with the properties of each. Here’s the lowdown on what exactly each oil brings to the (dressing) table:

    Argan Oil

Argan Oil, also known as the “liquid gold” of Morocco, is packed full of ingredients that are great for your skin. It has 80% nourishing and moisturising fatty acids – mainly oleic acid, linoleic acid and palmitic acid – and contains a relatively large amount of antioxidant Vitamin E, as well as ferulic acid and rare sterols that have soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

    Prickly Pear Oil

This very rare and expensive oil contains 70% high-linoleic acid, which has a really important role in maintaining and repairing the skin's moisture barrier, the most important factor for healthy-looking skin. As a hyaluronic acid oil, it also absorbs easily into the top layers of the skin and gives it a lovely, velvety feel.

    Jojoba Oil

Whether you call it Jojoba, Jo-jo-ba or “Hoho-ba”, this is a super-hydrating ingredient. It has some of the most oil-rich seeds, and the thing that's special about it from a scientific point of view is its chemical composition. It’s almost identical in nature to that of your skin’s sebum, going to work by tricking the skin into thinking that it’s produced enough sebum for balancing and self-regulating.

    Desert Date Oil

Otherwise known as Balanites Roxburghii seed oil, this oil is known for its dry touch and quick penetration that leaves the skin feeling soft and silky. Packed with fatty acids like omega-6 and omega-9, antioxidants and vitamin E, Desert Date Oil is also known for its ability to reduce the appearance of dark spots and reduce damage caused by sunlight or rashes.

    Olive Oil

Our Olive-Oil Complex provides a natural alternative to silicones, spreads evenly over the skin, and is rapidly absorbed. It leaves skin feeling powdery soft and hydrated without any residue, and is absolutely loaded with essential oleic, palmitic and linoleic fatty acids.

    Almond Oil

Sweet Almond Oil is known for being super-rich in Vitamin A as well as Vitamins, B1, B2 and B6. These B vitamins in particular are essential for cell metabolism and energy.

    Apricot Oil

Apricot Oil is our antioxidant powerhouse. It's pressed from apricot kernels, which are high in Vitamin A and Vitamin E. It also has an excellent antioxidant profile, helps mop up any free radicals and protects from environmental stressors.

    Meadowfoam Oil

This is taken from the Limnanthes alba, a beautiful white flower whose seed oil has a unique fatty-acid composition with 95% of it being long-chain fatty acids. These are brilliant for making the oil extremely stable. It also contains antioxidants such as Vitamin E, as well as some sterols.

    Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil

Also known as Abyssinian Oil, this has a unique fatty-acid profile and contains a high amount of erucic acid. Erucic acid is really important for soothing the skin, reducing redness and improving the health of the moisture barrier.
